Key accountability index for CT schools ticked up last year

by Theo Peck-Suzuki, CT Mirror October 27, 2026 Connecticut’s Next Generation Accountability Index for public schools showed modest improvement across most categories in the 2025-26 school year, the State Department of Education said Tuesday. The index combines 12 factors, including test scores and chronic absenteeism, to produce one number representing the performance of Connecticut schools. For the 2025-26 school year, the statewide index came out to 72.2, a slight improvement over the previous year’s 71.8 but below its pre-pandemic 2018-19 score of 74.2. Among the highlights were the 4-year graduation rate, which reached 91.2%, and the proportion of students demonstrating postsecondary readiness, which reached 49.9%. There’s rematch happening in an evolving CT district. Republican fears growth of polarization, socialism

Connecticut’s 4th Congressional District, in the southwestern corner of the state, has seen somewhat of a political transformation over the past two decades. The district was a Republican stronghold for 40 years and was represented by more liberal Republicans. But that changed in 2008 when Jim Himes first ran and flipped the seat during the first election of Barack Obama. Himes defeated Chris Shays, a moderate Republican who would often buck his own party. Shays was the last Republican from Connecticut to serve in Congress. Since then, the 4th District has been reliably blue and is expected to stay that way after the Nov. 3 midterm elections. Himes has some theories about what happened, pointing to the shifting dynamics within a political party and not so much the electorate itself. Worcester man arrested on child rape charge in Milford

MILFORD, MA — A 63-year-old Worcester man has been arrested on charges of raping a child at a Milford church. Raul Feliciano was taken into custody Oct. 23 following an investigation by the Milford Police Department Family Services Unit. The investigation began Sept. 9 after a victim under 14 years old reported being sexually assaulted in the basement of a family church in Milford. Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Feliciano at approximately 9 a.m. Oct. 23. Worcester police arrested Feliciano at approximately 1:15 p.m. that day before transferring custody to Milford police for booking. Feliciano was released on $15,000 bail Oct. 23. He faces charges of rape of a child and indecent assault and battery on a child under 14. Arraignment is scheduled for this week.
